Thanks to a grant from the Indiana Special Education Assisted Licensure Program (I-SEAL), Indiana Wesleyan University – National & Global (IWU) is offering licensed teachers the opportunity to obtain and fund their special education licensure. This partnership will eliminate financial barriers to licensure and increase the number of special education teachers across Indiana.
“We’re thrilled to work with I-SEAL to open doors for teachers who want to pursue additional licensure in special education,” says IWU Director of Academic Operations Tony Hembrock. "One of our goals at this university is to provide pathways for education. This grant helps us fulfill this goal."
Through the I-SEAL grant, classroom teachers with an existing Indiana teaching license can enroll in IWU’s Special Education Teaching Certificate program to pursue Exceptional Needs - Mild Intervention P-12 licensure. By enrolling in the program, teachers gain content and pedagogical knowledge related to special education professional teaching standards.
The Special Education Teaching Certificate program aligns with the initial licensure standards established by the Council for Exceptional Children, state licensure requirements for Indiana, and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation's advanced-level program standards. Courses are designed to provide participants with methods and materials to serve students with exceptionalities through mild intervention.
