The School of Educational Leadership at Indiana Wesleyan University-National and Global is pleased to announce a new Transition to Teaching (TTT) graduate certificate in special education.
Schools are presently experiencing a shortage of qualified special education teachers across the nation. Since this is a high need area, there are many prospective candidates in the state and nation, with emergency teaching permits in special education. The fully online TTT Special Education graduate certificate will meet the needs of prospective candidates who are seeking career changes to become licensed special education teachers in Indiana who do not already possess an elementary teaching license.
This graduate certificate program is designed specifically for learners seeking initial licensure in Indiana who already have a bachelor’s degree. The program guides students through practical coursework, including classroom management plans, behavior intervention plans, and other assignments intended to help teachers support the healthy development of students with special needs.
"This discipline is exciting because of the level of influence and impact that a special education professional can have on families and children to support and strengthen healthy communities," said Allisha Beerwart, Assistant Professor of Special Education for the School of Educational Leadership.
The program takes less than two years to complete. Graduates will be prepared for various special education occupations, including:
- Special education teacher
- Curriculum developer
- Special education coordinator or lead teacher
- Special education teacher assistant
Applicants for the TTT in Special Education program must have earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the subject area of special education. Prospective students who don’t meet the admissions requirements can apply for IWU’s Special Education Training Certificate, which will help them prepare and transition smoothly into the TTT Special Education program.
The program has multiple start dates throughout the year, and applications are now open for 2021 cohorts. For more information or to apply, visit indwes.edu/TTTSE.
