Indiana Wesleyan University’s Master of Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy (MFT) online program has received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). The virtual MFT program is now one in a short list of COAMFTE-accredited online masters programs across the country.
IWU’s MFT online program—which welcomed its first cohort in Fall 2020—is a 60-credit-hour graduate program with an interpersonal focus and holistic approach, emphasizing family systems within each student's Christian worldview context. The program focuses on training clinicians as well as providing a venue for students to learn and process what it means to integrate their faith into their clinical work. IWU’s onsite MFT programs have gained strong reputations and maintain a 100% job placement rate.
“Obtaining COAMFTE accreditation for our new virtual branch speaks of the positive standing of our onsite programs and highlights the level of content and experience our program has to offer,” said Dr. Nenetzin Stoeckle, MFT program director at IWU. “We are very proud to have received accreditation so early after the inauguration of our online program as it is a reflection of the hard work of our faculty, students and graduates in keeping high standards.”
To receive COAMFTE accreditation, a program must meet the following five requirements:
- Demonstrating that it implements an outcomes-based education.
- Maintaining a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Having the infrastructure and environmental support for students and faculty.
- Having both curriculum and a practice component that support the professional principles of marriage and family therapy.
- Showing program effectiveness and improvement.
“Marriage and family therapy is recognized as a self-standing profession nationwide, and licensure is available in all 50 states,” said Stoeckle. “For many states, graduating from a COAMFTE-accredited program provides a green light in the licensure process, which is highly valued.”
