For individuals looking to transition to a career in the sports-related industry, Indiana Wesleyan University’s newest program, a new Master of Arts degree in Sports Leadership (MASL), is an ideal fit.
The sports and recreation industry is a vast and growing field, including health and wellness organizations, fan sports and eSports in addition to traditional coaching positions. This program will prepare a student to exert effective leadership in their sports and recreation organization while also understanding how to manage and leverage fundamental issues such as sports marketing, sports finance, sports law, and others.
“One of the unique elements of our program is the way it focuses on leadership,” Mark Rennaker, Ph.D., department chair for the department of leadership studies, said. “Some of our competitors have sports leadership degree programs, but our program puts our students into interdisciplinary contact with students from multiple fields. The interdisciplinary discussions and central focus on leadership set our program apart.”
Rennaker has worked on developing the Master’s in Sports Leadership degree for years with this mindset. Specifically, it was designed so that any individual, regardless of professional or educational background, would be able to transition into this growing field. Through this innovative program design, students will engage in an interdisciplinary core of leadership courses ranging from leadership theory to sports leadership facilities to sports event management.
“Leadership always matters. It matters in every career field. It matters in every organization. Leadership knowledge and skill can be a career accelerator that helps a person gain job promotions and new opportunities. These skills can impact every area of a person’s life including home, church, hobbies and relationships. It can effectively change a person and all that they do,” Rennaker said.
