According to the Independent Colleges of Indiana’s (ICI) 2019 economic impact report, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) has the second-highest total economic impact generated for Indiana at an amount of $392,202,538.
ICI is a non-profit organization that serves as the collective voice of Indiana’s 30 private colleges and universities for excellence and choice in higher education. Their economic impact report is based on the jobs created, tax revenue and overall economic impact of colleges as reported to the College Board.
“ICI helps private universities demonstrate their positive impact on students and communities. Indiana’s private colleges and universities offer far and away the most cost-effective use of state funds for the development of the state’s workforce, and the economic well-being of Indiana communities,” Dr. David Wright, president of IWU, said.
According to the report, IWU has directly purchased over $197 million in goods and services from Indiana businesses and attracted over 147,000 visitors. These transactions create a ripple effect through the Indiana economy, resulting in over 4,000 jobs and an economic impact of over $392 million dollars in Indiana.
IWU’s total economic impact is second to Notre Dame which has generated over $2 billion. However, out of the 30 independent colleges in Indiana, IWU has the most Hoosier students at 12,413.
“IWU is a Hoosier success story – an institution founded almost 100 years ago in Marion, Indiana with a small handful of students that has become a global learning community that still serves more Hoosiers than any other private institution in Indiana,” Wright said.
