Indiana Wesleyan University’s school of nursing is launching a new post-baccalaureate to doctor of nursing practice program that students can complete online.
The new program allows students with a bachelor’s degree in nursing to advance directly into a doctoral program, skipping the master’s degree entirely. This program is designed to expedite students’ entry into the nurse practitioner profession.
To earn the doctoral degree, students will complete 17 courses, two scholarly projects and a cross-cultural experience. The degree is available to be completed entirely online with onsite intensives at the beginning of each year. Applicants looking to enter this degree program must have a completed bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing with a national nursing accreditation, and a grade-point average of at least 3.25.
The new program is accepting applications from students who want to begin the program as early as August 2019. A second cohort is planned to start the coursework in May of 2020, said Karen Hoffman, dean and associate vice president at IWU’s School of Nursing.
Hoffman said she was inspired to develop this program to provide a more direct route for new bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) graduates to earn a doctorate degree. “Students are seeking a quicker path to nursing practice, and this new program fulfills that need,“ Hoffman said. “IWU’s post-baccalaureate to doctor of nursing practice program will place graduates into the field more quickly and will provide a longer career of contribution and service to the community.”
