U.S. Congresswoman Susan Brooks paid a visit to Marion Design Co. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 where she met with leaders of the organization, received a tour of the facility and learned about the work Marion Design Co. is doing in the local community.
Marion Design Co. is a creative studio and branch of Indiana Wesleyan University’s Division of Art + Design that is located in Marion’s downtown square. It was co-founded in 2016 by three IWU Art + Design professors, Luke Anspach, Herb Peterson and Wendy Puffer, for the purpose of implementing socially relevant design solutions that propel and empower the people of Marion.
“Seeing [Marion Design Co.] is awesome,” said Brooks. “I love when people focus on downtowns. I was deputy mayor for Steve Goldsmith back in the 90’s… and his belief was always if you focus on the urban core, everything else will get better. I know there are so many assets here, and it’s great to see Marion Design Co. bringing everything together.”
Brooks is the U.S. Representative for Indiana’s 5th congressional district, which spans eight urban, suburban and rural counties in Central Indiana. She uses her background as a Deputy Mayor of Indianapolis, a U.S. Attorney and a community college administrator to improve education, jobs, health and homeland security. She currently serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is a member of the Communications and Technology, the Health, and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittees. Through her membership on the Energy and Commerce Committee, she is working on mental health, substance abuse, biodefense and Medicaid reform issues.
“It was an honor to meet with Congresswoman Susan Brooks today,” said Puffer. “Her care for our community was reflected in her attentive presence to each person in the room at Marion Design Co.”
