The 29th annual Jack and Marge Colescott Athletic Scholarship Golf Scramble took place on Thursday, Sept. 13 at Arbor Trace Golf Club. Indiana Wesleyan University athletes Emma Travis and Adrien Howard were presented athletic scholarships during the event.
Travis and Howard each received $2,500 scholarships during the lunch presentation between the morning and evening golf rounds. Jack Colescott presented the awards. Scholarships are presented each year to one female and one male student-athlete who attend IWU and are Grant County residents.
The annual event has raised over $1 million in athletic scholarships over the 29-year history of the tournament that has become a staple of Indiana Wesleyan athletics. Over 40 Grant County students have been awarded this scholarship over the past 29 years.
“The Colescott Tournament has just become a big part of what we are as an athletic department,” stated IWU Director of Athletics Mark DeMichael. “It represents Jack and Marge Colescott who represents everything others want to be when it comes to class, humility and putting others first. We couldn’t ask for better names to be on this event and this athletic scholarship.”
Travis is a sophomore Global Ministries/Community Development major that is on the IWU women’s swimming team. She was a member of the Oak Hill Swim Team prior to IWU. In the inaugural season of competition for the IWU swim team, Travis led the Wildcats with NAIA All-American performances at the NAIA National Championship in the 50-Free and 400-Free Relay. She had qualified for the nationals in eight events.
“Emma is quick to celebrate the accomplishments of others, marveling regularly at the strides taken, not only by her own teammates, but also by her competitors,” said IWU head coach Laurissa Dalrymple. “She is known for her encouraging gestures, inquiries as to how her teammates are doing both in and out of the pool, and her willingness to pray for the needs of those around her. She is a faith-filled encourager whose kindness is contagious.”
Howard is a junior Business Administration major who runs for the IWU men’s cross country and track and field teams. He graduated from Marion High School. He helped the cross country team to a 14th place finish at the 2017 NAIA National Championship and won the Crossroads League championship as part of the 4x800-Meter Relay.
“Adrien is determined to learn how to better honor God with his running this season,” said IWU cross country coach John Foss. “He has transitioned from a transfer student to one of our quality team leaders in 2018. His goals are to run amongst the best runners in the NAIA while making sure to find his motivation from being a good steward of his God-given gifts. Adrien is incredibly coachable and he makes our team better in both performance and unity.”
