The Indiana Wesleyan University women’s basketball team recently returned from an overseas mission trip to the Dominican Republic where they partnered with GO Ministries to redeem, renew and restore communities. The trip took place July 17-24 and included 14 players, two coaches and three support staff members.
“Our program talks a lot about the true meaning of success,” said head coach Ethan Whaley. “While today's culture says success is determined by wins, we believe that it should be measured by the growth of others. I can think of no better way to live this out than a missions trip.”
During the trip, the team worked on community and infrastructure projects, like the GO Ministries Leadership Development Complex, a place where individuals of all ages can go to buy food, play sports, attend classes and learn about Christ. They also worked with children to teach them the game of basketball.
“My one word that would sum up this trip would be uncomfortable but in the best way,” said sophomore Anne Secrest. “The whole week we talked about getting out of our comfort zone. Whether that be digging a hole in the burning sun, having deep conversations with someone you barely know or leaving your phone behind for the week. This is where we grow the most in these times of discomfort, and what better way than to grow with your team, your family, your sisters in Christ, the ones who you will risk everything on the court for?”
The IWU women’s basketball team will play their first home game on Oct. 30 against Cornerstone University. To see the full schedule, visit www.iwuwildcats.com/schedule/54/7.
