Last Friday, Indiana Wesleyan University dedicated a new space especially for student veterans at the Cincinnati Education Center.
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones was the keynote speaker for the event. In addition, IWU invited the student veterans who attend classes at the Cincinnati location to attend the event, which also featured a breakout session geared toward the student veterans. In that session, Leslie Zolman, director of admissions and academic advising for IWU-National & Global, provided guidance on “Putting Together Your Toolbox.”
“We know that veterans returning to school are not the traditional student and face their own unique challenges,” said K.C. Haight, director of military and veteran recruitment for IWU-National & Global. “Our goal, at this center, is to provide the support, guidance, help and understanding to help them achieve their education goals. We hope this is a place that will continue to help our student veterans with their transition.”
The university has been planning this center for several months as a way to provide additional support to the 90 student veterans who attend classes onsite in Cincinnati, said Tom West, regional director for southern Ohio and northern Kentucky for IWU. West, Haight and Natalie Canty, a corporate representative for southern and central Ohio and northern Kentucky, have worked together to plan the center and the dedication ceremony. The center will provide a place where veterans will feel comfortable studying and connecting with other veterans, West said.
“Veterans Day is a perfect time to unveil this new space for this group of students who have given so much in service to our country,” West said. “We want them to know that we are on their side and we want this new center to be a resource for them as they complete their educational journey at IWU.”
